The perfect way to explore the surrounding area of Windyheads would be on foot or bicycle, so if you have a bike – BRING IT!

Banffshire Coast: The Banffshire Coast is a beautiful area for cycling and trekking. There are several routes that take in the stunning coastal scenery, including the Banff to Portsoy coastal trail, which is approximately 13 miles long. The route is suitable for both cycling and walking and takes in a number of picturesque villages along the way.

Moray Coast Trail: The Moray Coast Trail is a 50-mile coastal trail that runs from Forres to Cullen. The route takes in some of the most beautiful coastal scenery in Scotland and is suitable for both cycling and trekking. The trail is well signposted and there are plenty of places to stop and rest along the way.

Bennachie: Bennachie is a range of hills located near Inverurie, approximately 25 miles south of AB43 6PU. The hills offer a number of hiking and cycling routes, with stunning views across the surrounding countryside. There are several routes to choose from, ranging from easy to challenging, so there is something for all abilities.

Formartine and Buchan Way: The Formartine and Buchan Way is a 53-mile cycle and walking route that runs from Dyce to Fraserburgh. The route follows the former railway line and takes in some beautiful countryside along the way. There are several places to stop and rest along the route, including cafes and pubs.

There are many coastal paths offering excellent views such as the Troop Head walk. Or you can take the Moray Coast and cycle from Aberdour Bay to Banff – this scenic route is roughly 13 miles and follows quiet country roads with points of interest along the way including Rosehearty – one of the oldest seaports in Scotland – and Pitsligo castle.

If you fancy a view from higher up, try the Windyheads Hill which is manageable for most of the family considering its height of 231m. Although, if you’re feeling more adventurous then you can head 31 miles South West to the Bennachie Mountain Centre.
